Rumbling - Jinari

Japanese:
Rumbling - Jinari

The phenomenon in which earthquake vibrations are heard as low sounds. Even when an earthquake is too small to be felt by the body, the sound can be heard. This occurs when vibrations of frequencies above tens of hertz that occur at the epicenter of the earthquake reach the surface of the earth and travel through the air. Vibrations of this frequency band are greatly attenuated underground, so only earthquakes with shallow epicenters are accompanied by rumblings. Also, depending on the underground structure and topography, there are places where rumblings are easy to hear and places where they cannot be heard at all. The area around Mount Tsukuba (Ibaraki Prefecture) is famous for the fact that rumblings are often heard because bedrock that is usually hidden underground is exposed above ground. There are many reports of people feeling rumblings in various places during major earthquakes, but this is often the sound of buildings and structures creaking or roof tiles and furniture shaking.
