1893-1964 Leader of the Italian Communist Party. He led the Turin labor movement together with Gramsci during World War I. In 1921, he left the Socialist Party to form the Communist Party. He fled fascism and went into exile in the Soviet Union, where he became an executive member of the Comintern, and returned to the USSR after World War II to become the party's secretary-general. After criticizing Stalin in 1956, he actively advocated the diversification of socialist lines, the theory of structural reform, and clarified Italy's own unique policy.
