1651‐1719 French Catholic priest and educator. Born into a family of a magistrate in Reims, he became a monk in 1678. Following the wishes of Nicolas Roland, who founded the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus in the city for the purpose of educating women, he led the religious order and made every effort to recruit and train teachers. In 1681, he opened a free school for poor children at his home, and in 1684, using this as a base, he established an educational masters' association called the Society of Christian School Masters, investing all his fortune in Christian education. Robert Cavelier de La SalleFrench explorer. Born near Rouen, he initially belonged to the Society of Jesus, but in 1667 he was absolved from his religious orders and traveled to French colonies in North America, where he spent most of his life exploring the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. He carried out his first expedition in 1669, and in 1678 he began full-scale exploration under official orders from King Louis XIV. In 1682 he traveled from the Great Lakes to the Illinois River, then down the Mississippi River, and reached its mouth for the first time. He named the area around the mouth of the river Louisiana after Louis XIV and presented it to the king, but the new colonial governor was hostile to him, and his explorations did not receive due recognition.
