Sudbury (English spelling)

Japanese: サドベリー(英語表記)Sudbury
Sudbury (English spelling)
A mining city in southeastern Ontario, Canada. Located at the southern end of the Canadian Shield, the surrounding area has gently undulating terrain and many lakes and marshes. In 1883, copper and nickel ores were discovered nearby during the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the city developed rapidly. It subsequently became a transportation, administrative, economic, and educational center. Although there are few factories, the city produces mining machinery, lumber, and wood products. There are nickel, copper, platinum, and other mines and smelters nearby, and the city produces about half of the country's nickel and about 35% of its copper. Dead forests due to long-term pollution from the smelters are noticeable. One-third of the residents are of French descent, and the ratio is even higher in the surrounding rural areas. Population: 160,274 (2011).
