Pavel Petrovich Bazhov

Soviet novelist. Born into a family of mining engineers in the Urals, he graduated from the Perm Theological Seminary. He worked as a teacher and a journalist before beginning his career as a writer. He wrote collections of tales such as "Old Times in the Urals" (1924) and "The Malachite Box" (1939), based on the folklore of the Urals that he had collected himself. His fantastic characters who embody the hidden power of nature and his use of dialect with rich expressiveness give his works a unique lyricism. One story in "The Malachite Box," "The Stone Flower," is particularly famous and has been adapted for ballet, film, and opera. His other works include the autobiographical novel "The Green Pony" (1939) and the memoir "Far Away, Nearby" (1949).
