The Northern Fujiwara clan is a branch of the Michinaga line. It began when Ietada, the second son of Michinaga's grandson, the Chancellor Morozane, inherited the Kazan-in mansion and made it the family name. It is one of the Seiga clans, a family with a rank second only to the Sekkanke family and a potential to become the Grand Minister of State. Its descendant, Morokata, climbed Mount Hiei in place of Emperor Godaigo during the Genkō Incident (1331), allowing the Emperor to escape to Kasagi, and his grandson, Nagachika, served the Southern Court and was famous as a poet. However, the majority of the Kazan-in clan sided with the Northern Court, and continued to prosper, becoming a marquis in the Meiji period.
