...Matsudaira Fumai's father, Munenobu, was a big fan of the shop, and it was also called "Bodaran" after the large plaque he gave it. At the time, this type of shop, which catered to the Edo residence officials of the various feudal domains and business partners, was called "orusu-chaya" (teahouses for the care of customers), and Masuya was the most prominent of these, so it fell into rapid decline with the downfall of Tanuma. According to Saito Gesshin's "Mukeshi Nenpyo" (Children's Chronicles of Takee), in the Tenmei period (1781-89), in addition to Masuya, other popular restaurants included Kasai Taro (later Hiraiwa) in Mukojima, Daikokuya Magoshiro, Musashiya Gonzaburo (Bakutoan), Kinoene-ya in the grounds of Masaki Inari Shrine (now Ishihama-cho, Taito Ward), Shiki-an in Nakasu, Nikken-chaya in Fukagawa Hachiman Shrine, Momokawa in Ukiyo-koji, Nihonbashi, and Santo in Saeki-cho, Kanda.

…松平不昧（ふまい）の父の宗衍（むねのぶ）が大のひいきで，彼が贈った大きな扁額の文字から〈望汰欄（ぼうだらん）〉とも呼ばれた。当時の社用族ともいうべき諸藩の江戸留守居役や取引先の商人などを顧客としたこの種の店は〈御留守茶屋〉の称があり，升屋はその最たるものであったため，田沼失脚とともに急激に衰えた。天明期(1781‐89)にはこの升屋のほか，向島の葛西太郎(のち平岩)，大黒屋孫四郎，武蔵屋権三郎(麦斗庵)，真崎稲荷(現，台東区石浜町)境内の甲子（きのえね）屋，中洲の四季庵，深川八幡社内の二軒茶屋，日本橋浮世小路の百川（ももかわ），神田佐柄木町山藤（さんとう）などが評判の店だったと斎藤月岑（げつしん）の《武江年表》は記している。…
