A butterfly of the family Pieridae in the order Lepidoptera. It is a rather large butterfly with wings that span about 6.5 cm and are slightly vertically long. Its Japanese name comes from the fine wave pattern on the underside. It is widely distributed from India to Southeast Asia and Australia, and in Japan, it lives in the Yaeyama Islands. It has long been recorded as a vagrant in western Kyushu. It was not uncommon for females that landed in Kyushu or western Japan as vagrants after a typhoon to cause a temporary outbreak if they happened to encounter a food plant, but in recent years, cases of outbreaks on the mainland have become rare, possibly due to the decline in the cultivation of hubuso and ebistugusa in fields as ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine.
