…It belongs to the South Semitic branch of the Semitic language family along with Ethiopian, and is divided into North and South Arabian in a broad sense, but usually refers to only the former. In Arabic, it is al-'Arabiya. It is currently the official language in Syria, Iraq, and other Southwest Asian countries, as well as in North African countries such as Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco, and is also spoken in other parts of North Africa, Uzbekistan in Central Asia, and Malta in the Mediterranean, with a total population estimated at more than 100 million.
