An unsaturated hydroxycarboxylic acid. Also known as ricinoleic acid. It has the structure of 12-hydroxy-9- cis -octadecenoic acid. It exists in castor oil as a glyceride, and can be obtained by dissolving the mixed fatty acids obtained by saponifying castor oil in acetone and then subjecting it to fractional crystallization. At room temperature, it is a colorless oily liquid that dissolves easily in ethanol (ethyl alcohol), ether, and chloroform. It is used as a raw material in the manufacture of paints, printing inks, lubricants, cosmetics, and soap for dry cleaning. In addition, castor oil is used medicinally as a laxative and ointment base material.
