A Russian female dancer. A famous ballerina who was praised on a par with Pavlova. Born in Rostov-on-Don, she graduated from the Imperial Choreographic School in St. Petersburg. After working at the Mariinsky Theater, she performed with Nijinsky in the Ballets Russes' US tour in 1916, and starred in a revised version of The Sleeping Beauty in London in 1921. She left her home country in 1924 and solidified her reputation with a revival of Giselle at the Paris Opera, which had not been performed for half a century. She left the stage in 1937 and spent the latter half of her life in the United States.

ロシアの女性舞踊家。パブロワと並び称された名バレリーナ。ロストフ・ナ・ドヌーに生まれ，ペテルブルグの帝室舞踊学校を卒業。マリインスキー劇場を経て1916年バレエ・リュッスの米国公演でニジンスキーと共演し，1921年のロンドン公演では《眠れる森の美女》の改訂上演に主演。1924年故国を離れ，半世紀来途絶えていた《ジゼル》のパリのオペラ座での復活上演で名声を不動にする。1937年に舞台を去り，後半生は米国で暮らした。
