Kasari [town] - Kasari

Japanese: 笠利[町] - かさり

An old town at the northern tip of Amami Oshima, Oshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture. It was the location of the magistrate's office during the feudal period. The town mainly produces sugarcane and has a sugar factory. Vegetables and flowers are also grown, and Oshima Tsumugi is a specialty. Amami Airport is located and National Route 58 runs to Naze City (now Amami City). The coastline, including Kasari Bay in Obore-dani, is part of the Amami Islands Quasi-National Park. In March 2006, it was incorporated as a city by merging with Naze City and Sumiyou Village in Oshima District to form Amami City. 60.19 ^km2 . Population 7,029 (2003).

鹿児島県大島郡，奄美(あまみ)大島北端の旧町。藩政期の代官所所在地。サトウキビを主産し製糖工場がある。野菜・花卉(かき)栽培も行い，大島紬(つむぎ)を特産。奄美空港があり名瀬市（現・奄美市）へ国道58号線が通じる。溺れ谷(おぼれだに)の笠利湾など海岸一帯は奄美群島国定公園に属する。2006年３月，名瀬市，大島郡住用村と合併し市制，奄美市となる。60.19km²。7029人（2003）。
