It was in Charles de Brosse's doctoral dissertation "Cult of the Fetishes" published in 1760 that the word "fetish" clearly came to have the meaning of "fetish" and the concept of "fétichisme" (fetish worship) was presented as an academic term. In it, he defined it as "the worship of certain earthly physical things called fetishes among African Negroes, which is named fetishism."
