The island of St. Kitts and Nevis is part of the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. It has an area of 93 km2 and a population of 9,130 (1991). The capital is Charlestown on the west coast of the island. Settled by the British in 1628, it was one of the most prosperous islands in the Antilles, but was intervened by the French and Spanish in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is a mountainous volcanic island, and most of the agriculture is small-scale. Vegetables and fruits are exported to St. Kitts, separated by a 3km-wide waterway, while cotton and coconuts are cultivated on the former sugar cane fields, and there are large coconut plantations.
