A scholar of Japanese classics and historical research in the late Edo period. Born into a town elder's family in Edo. Nicknamed Hikosuke, later Hikobei. His given name was also called Nobuyo, after an acquaintance gave him a bronze seal with the name upside down. His pen names included Intei and Shizunoya. He did not study under any particular scholar, but had a wide circle of acquaintances, including Oyamada Tomokiyo, Kishimoto Yuzuru, and Yamazaki Yoshishige. He searched through a wide range of documents, both ancient and modern, and excelled in researching social customs. His most famous work is "Kyushoran," published in 1830 (the first year of the Tenpo era), and its research into early modern customs, calligraphy, paintings, poetry, songs, dances, plants, and more, making it a valuable historical resource for research into the lives of ordinary people in the late early modern period. Other works include "New and Supplementary Annual Events," "Abridged Revised Buko Chronology," and "A Chronicle of the Entertainment District."
