Mahavira's real name was Vardha‐māna (meaning "the one who flourishes"). In the Buddhist scriptures, he is called Nigaṇṭha Nātaputta and is considered to be one of the representative free thinkers (six heretics) of the time of Gautama Buddha. He was called so because he was "a descendant of the Nāta clan" and became a monk and practiced asceticism in the ancient religious sect of Nigantha (one who has left bondage).
