Along with the Brahmanas and the Upanishads, these are documents that accompany the Vedas. They were compiled over a period of several centuries, beginning in 1500 BCE. They are translated as forest books. They were so named because they describe secret rituals and mystical doctrines, and were imparted in remote forests. In terms of content, they are somewhere between the Brahmanas and the Upanishads, and while explaining rituals, they also touch upon philosophical issues.
