As Qin in the west grew in power in the second half of the 4th century BCE, the important foreign policy strategies were the alliance strategy in which the six eastern states of Yan, Qi, Zhao, Han, Wei, and Chu formed a vertical alliance to oppose Qin, and the coalition strategy in which Qin formed separate alliances with each of the six states. Those who campaigned on such strategies to the feudal lords were called the vertical and horizontal schools, and the famous names for the alliance strategy were Su Qin and Zhang Yi. Other vertical and horizontal school members included Su Dai, Su Qin's younger brother, Chen Chen, and Xi Shou, and even the Han dynasty's Kuai Tong, Xu Le, and Zhufu Yan are considered to be of the same school. …

…中国，戦国末の列国間の外交政策。合縦連横ともいう。前4世紀後半いらい西方の秦が強大になってくると，東の燕･斉･趙･韓･魏･楚の6国が縦に同盟して秦に対抗する合従策と，秦が6国のそれぞれと単独で同盟を結ぶ連衡策とが重要な外交政策となった。このような策を諸侯に遊説するものを縦横家（じゆうおうか∥しようおうか）とよび，合従策は蘇秦，連衡策は張儀の名が有名である。縦横家には他に蘇秦の弟の蘇代，陳軫（ちんしん），犀首らがあり，くだって漢代の蒯通（かいつう），徐楽，主父偃（しゆほえん）らもその亜流とみなされている。…
