Kabuki kyogen. Sewamono. 4 acts. Commonly known as "Yudono no Chobei." Written by Kawatake Mokuami. First performed at the Harukiza Theater in Tokyo in October 1881 (Meiji 14). Cast included Ichikawa Danjūrō IX as Hatazui Chobei, Ichikawa Gonjūrō as Sakuragawa Goroza and Mizuno Jurozaemon, Iwai Shiwaku as Chobei's wife Oji, and others. In the first performance, the conflict between townsfolk and samurai slaves was entangled with the grudge of a favored sumo wrestler's match, but in 1891 Kawatake Shinshichi III added a "Murayamaza Fight Scene" including a play-within-a-play "Kinpira Homon Arasoi" to the prologue, and this became the standard format thereafter, with the story about the sumo wrestler Sakuragawa being omitted.
