A type of device that analyzes and records sound, especially voice. Voice waves (several dozen to about 6000 Hz) are converted into electrical waves by a microphone, which are then split into a number of frequency bands by a number of filters (usually 500, but in simpler models, 12). The signal is recorded on a recording paper that passes through at a constant speed, with the intensity of the output of each filter recorded. The resulting recording diagram (sonagram) has time on the horizontal axis and frequency on the vertical axis, with the intensity of the pattern indicating the strength of the components at each moment and in each frequency range. The characteristics of each vowel are clearly visible in the pattern. → Related topics Speech synthesis | Voice typewriter | Voiceprint | Formant Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
