A type of device that analyzes and records sound, especially voice. Voice waves (several dozen to about 6000 Hz) are converted into electrical waves by a microphone, which are then split into a number of frequency bands by a number of filters (usually 500, but in simpler models, 12). The signal is recorded on a recording paper that passes through at a constant speed, with the intensity of the output of each filter recorded. The resulting recording diagram (sonagram) has time on the horizontal axis and frequency on the vertical axis, with the intensity of the pattern indicating the strength of the components at each moment and in each frequency range. The characteristics of each vowel are clearly visible in the pattern.

音，特に音声を分析記録する装置の一種。音声の波（数十〜約6000Hz）をマイクロホンで電気の波に変え，それを若干個（ふつう500個，簡単なものでは12個）の濾波(ろは)器によってその数だけの周波数帯に分割し，一定速度で通過する記録紙上に各濾波器の出力に応じた濃淡を記録させるもの。これによって得られる記録図（ソナグラム）は横軸が時間，縦軸が周波数を表し，模様の濃淡が各瞬間・各周波数域の成分の強さを示す。各母音の特徴などは明瞭なパターンとして表れる。
