Arago's Turntable - Arago's Turntable

...Eddy currents are generated in an electrical conductor when magnetic lines of force that pass through it move relative to the conductor. In 1824, D.F. J. Arago discovered the phenomenon of a magnetic needle on a rotating disk (known as Arago's rotating disk), and this phenomenon was later explained by the law of electromagnetic induction discovered by M. Faraday. Since J.B. Foucault demonstrated in an experiment (1855) that eddy currents cause a strong braking force to be exerted on a rotating electrical conductor disk in a strong magnetic field, they are also called Foucault currents, and this phenomenon is used in AC wattmeters and electromagnetic brakes.
