The name given by the ancient Greeks to the Kandahar region in southern Afghanistan today. The fertile land in the upper reaches of the Helmand River, called Harahuvati in Ancient Persian (from Sarasvati in Sanskrit, meaning "blessed by rivers"), was settled by Indo-Iranian peoples early on. During the Achaemenid period, satrapies were established there, and it was one of the bases for the dynasty's eastern operations.
