Also known as Douglas fir or Douglas fir. An evergreen tall tree of the pine family. Found along the Pacific coast of North America. Some are said to reach a height of 90m, and are known as the tallest tree species in the world along with the sequoia. The crown is narrowly conical, and the bark of large trees is vertically fissured. The leaves are linear and dark green. Monoecious. Flowers in April. The fruits are narrowly oval and drooping, ripening to a light brown color in October. It has been experimentally planted in Japan, but growth is poor. ベイマツ(米松),ダグラスモミとも。マツ科の常緑高木。北米太平洋沿岸に分布。高さ90mに達するものもあるといわれ,セコイアとともに世界最高樹種として知られる。樹冠は狭円錐状となり,大木の樹皮は縦裂する。葉は線形で暗緑色。雌雄同株。4月に開花。果実は狭楕円形で下垂し,10月に淡褐色に熟す。日本でも試験的に植林されたが,生長が悪い。材を建材,パルプなどとする。
