Black long ant - Kurona ari

They are insects belonging to the family Formicidae in the order Hymenoptera of the Insecta class. They are found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula, and China. The body length of workers is about 5 mm. Their bodies are black, with square heads and dense vertical wrinkles. They are harvester ants that store grass seeds and live in dry grasslands. They build nests underground, which can reach depths of more than 3 meters. They are active above ground from summer to autumn, collecting weed seeds and storing them in their nests. Winged ants emerge in April and May.

昆虫綱膜翅(まくし)目アリ科に属する昆虫。本州、四国、九州および朝鮮半島、中国に分布する。体長は働きアリで約5ミリメートル。体は黒色で、頭は四角張り、縦じわが密にある。草の種子を貯蔵する収穫アリで、乾燥した草地にすむ。巣は地中につくられ、その深さは3メートル以上に及ぶことがある。夏から秋に地上活動を行い、雑草の種子を集め、巣中に蓄える。羽アリは4、5月に飛び出す。
