Date of birth and death unknown. Legend has it that he was the first Indian monk to introduce Buddhism to China in the 1st century. His Sanskrit name was Dharmaraksha. A monk from Central India, he recited tens of thousands of chapters of sutras and commentaries, and was the teacher of Indian scholars. In 67 (Yongping 10) during the reign of Emperor Ming of the Later Han Dynasty, he traveled to Luoyang with Kasyapa Ma-ten, lived at the White Horse Temple, translated five volumes including the "Forty-two Chapters of the Sutra," and passed away at the age of 60. Around the 5th century, the legend that he was the first monk to introduce Buddhism to China was established.

生没年不詳。1世紀ころ、中国に仏教を伝えた最初のインド僧（伝説）。サンスクリット名はダルマラクシャDharma-raka。中インドの僧で、経論を誦(じゅ)すること数万章に及び、インド学者の師であった。67年（永平10）後漢(ごかん)、明帝(めいてい)のとき迦葉摩騰(かしょうまとう)とともに洛陽(らくよう)に至り、白馬(はくば)寺に住し、『四十二章経(しじゅうにしょうぎょう)』など5部を訳し、60余歳で寂した。5世紀ころから、仏教を伝えた最初の僧という伝説が定まった。
