Date of birth and death unknown. Legend has it that he was the first Indian monk to introduce Buddhism to China in the 1st century. His Sanskrit name was Dharmaraksha. A monk from Central India, he recited tens of thousands of chapters of sutras and commentaries, and was the teacher of Indian scholars. In 67 (Yongping 10) during the reign of Emperor Ming of the Later Han Dynasty, he traveled to Luoyang with Kasyapa Ma-ten, lived at the White Horse Temple, translated five volumes including the "Forty-two Chapters of the Sutra," and passed away at the age of 60. Around the 5th century, the legend that he was the first monk to introduce Buddhism to China was established.
