Commonly known as the Know-Nothing Party. A chauvinist political party in the 1850s in America that opposed foreign-born citizens, especially Irish Catholics, gaining power. It was originally formed as a secret society, and its nickname arose from the fact that its members would answer "I know nothing" when asked about the organization. It was active in state legislatures, mainly in the North, but when conflict arose between the North and South over slavery, it split and disappeared.
