…In the early Edo period, the area flourished as a town for merchants dealing in seafood, with a section in 1-chome commonly known as Asari-dana Yokocho and in 3-chome known as Sakana-dana. In 1725 (Kyoho 10), the famous Nihonbashi kimono merchant Izukuraya Kichiemon opened a branch in Sakana-dana, which became popular, and Sakana-dana was also called Izukura Yokocho. Around the same time, oral physician Kaneyasu Yuetsu opened a drug and haberdashery store in 3-chome and began selling a toothpaste called Nyukosan, leading to the name Kaneyasu Yokocho. …

…江戸時代前期には魚介類を扱う町人の町として栄え，1丁目には蜊店（あさりだな）横町，3丁目には肴店（さかなだな）と俗称される一角があった。肴店には1725年(享保10)日本橋の有名な呉服商伊豆蔵屋（いずくらや）吉右衛門が支店を開いて人気を集めたため，肴店は伊豆蔵横町とも呼ばれた。同じころ，3丁目には口中医師の兼康（かねやす）祐悦が薬種･小間物屋を開き，乳香散という歯磨粉を売り出したため，兼康横町という町名が生じた。…
