…After graduating, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in 1820 published the fairy-tale-like narrative poem Ruslan and Lyudmila, which won him enthusiastic support from the younger generation. However, he was sent to southern Russia because he sympathized with the Decembrists and wrote excellent political poems such as the ode to Liberty (1817) and The Village (1818), which criticized serfdom. His life in the south (1820-24) provided Pushkin, who was reading Byron at the time, with material for romantic narrative poems, beginning with The Prisoner of the Caucasus (1821). In 1824, a letter in which he affirmed atheism was confiscated, and he was dismissed from his official position as a person of interest and ordered to live in confinement in his estate in the village of Mikhailovskoye, Pskov Province. …
