The Ryukyuan dialects are divided into a northern group (Amami Okinawa dialect group) and a southern group (Miyako Yaeyama dialect group) by the wide ocean between the Okinawa Islands and the Miyako Islands. Recent research has further subdivided these two groups, mainly into larger islands.
