Misaki Peninsula

Japanese:
Misaki Peninsula

A peninsula jutting out from the northwest coast of Kagawa Prefecture. It is also called the Shonai Peninsula. It belongs to Mitoyo City. It is about 13 kilometers long and 3-4 kilometers wide, dividing the Bisan Strait and Hiuchi Nada Sea. It is made of granite, with the highest point being 352 meters at Shiundeyama. It is mountainous and the coast has many steep cliffs. Ohama village in the central southern part of the peninsula is located on a sandbar, and it is clear that the area west of Ohama is a land-tied island. The land-tied part is the site of the Urashima legend, with Namari being the birthplace of Urashima Taro, Hakozaki being the place where he set off for the Dragon Palace on a turtle, Hako being the place where the treasure box was opened, and Shiundeyama being the place where smoke from the treasure box rose. The Dragon Palace Dance is also still performed here. The remains of a highland Yayoi settlement have been discovered at the summit of Mt. Shiude, and there is an exhibition hall there.

It used to be one of the leading hot pepper producing areas in Japan, but recently floriculture has become popular. There is a bus service from JR Yosan Line Takuma Station to the Hako area.
