Born: 1509, Modena [Died] 1571. Fontainebleau Italian painter. Worked mainly in Ferrara, Bologna, and Paris. After being influenced by Correggio, he became a representative painter of Mannerism. In 1552, he traveled to France and founded the Fontainebleau School with Primaticcio. He is known for his mythological landscape paintings. His works include The Aeneid (Este Gallery, Modena), a series of frescoes in the Palazzo Bologna, and The Martyrdom of St. Peter and St. Paul (1547, Staatsgalerie Dresden).
