Born: 1509, Modena
[Died] 1571. Fontainebleau Italian painter. Worked mainly in Ferrara, Bologna, and Paris. After being influenced by Correggio, he became a representative painter of Mannerism. In 1552, he traveled to France and founded the Fontainebleau School with Primaticcio. He is known for his mythological landscape paintings. His works include The Aeneid (Este Gallery, Modena), a series of frescoes in the Palazzo Bologna, and The Martyrdom of St. Peter and St. Paul (1547, Staatsgalerie Dresden).

イタリアの画家。主としてフェララ，ボローニャ，パリで制作。コレッジオの影響を受けたのち，マニエリスムの代表的画家となる。 1552年渡仏し，プリマティッチオとともにフォンテンブロー派をつくる。神話的風景画に特色がある。作品は『アエネイス物語』 (モデナ，エステ画廊) ，パラッツォ・ボローニャ内フレスコ画連作，『聖ペテロと聖パウロの殉教』 (1547，ドレスデン国立絵画館) など。
