Urticaria - Hives

Japanese: 蕁麻疹 - じんましん
Urticaria - Hives
A disease in which the skin feels itchy, and when scratched, a rash appears, which is raised like welts with clearly defined borders, the size of a nail plate to the size of a palm. The rash disappears within a few minutes to a few hours, leaving no change afterwards, but it occurs repeatedly in spasmodic episodes. Rubbing the skin with a blunt object causes flushing and swelling (dermatographia). Most cases heal within a few days, but some cases are chronic and the rash does not stop for more than a month. Possible causes include autosensitization, menstrual disorders, pregnancy, sensitization due to foods, drugs, insect stings, etc., abnormal reactions to heat, cold, mechanical stimuli, light, etc., remote reactions to bacterial infections, gastrointestinal, hepatic, or renal diseases, a phenomenon of endocrine disorders, and psychological factors. Treatment involves removing the cause, as well as administering corticosteroids and antihistamines for acute cases, and autologous serum and hematopoietic drugs for chronic cases.
