Outbreeding - Outbreeding

The opposite of inbreeding is mating between distantly related individuals. The standard for the degree of relatedness is set at a greater distance than that of random mating. This is generally done to take advantage of the hybrid vigor that can be obtained. However, mating between individuals that are too distantly related can cause sterility or infertility in the hybrids (which in plants prevents them from producing seeds), which can be disadvantageous.

近親交配の反対で、縁の遠いものの間の交配のこと。その遠縁の程度の基準は、任意交配よりも遠い関係にあるものとされる。一般にこれによって得られる雑種強勢を利用するために行われる。しかし、あまり遠縁のものの間の交配は、雑種の不妊性や不稔(ふねん)性（植物では種子をつくる能力が妨げられること）を引き起こして、かえって不利になることがある。
