Duke of the Abruzzi

...The Karakoram Expedition by W. Moorcroft and others in 1819-25 was the first to carry out geographical explorations with a wide range of activities, and by the time of the Second World War, most of these had been completed. The main discoveries were the discovery of the Siachen Glacier by H. Strachey in 1847-48, the exploration of the Hisper, Biafo and Baltoro Glaciers by H.H. Godwin Austin in 1861, the crossing of the Mustagh Pass from the Sarpo Lago Glacier by F. Younghusband in 1886-87, the exploration of the Baltoro Glacier by W.M. Conway in 1892, the several extensive expeditions by Mr and Mrs. Workman in 1898-1912, the trial ascent _{of K2} by O. Eckenstein's party in 1902, and the ascent of _K2 by the Duke of Abruzzi in 1909. These include the first ascents of Scan Kangri and Chogoliza, the expedition of Eastern Karakoram by F. De Filippi in 13-14, the expedition by PC Visser and his wife in 1922-35, the exploration of the Baltoro Glacier and the Shaksgam River by the Duke of Spoleto in 1928-29, and the exploration of Siachen, Telam Sher and Limo Glaciers by G. Dainelli in 1930. In 1934, G. O. Dierenfurt and his wife made the first ascent of Sia Kangri.
