...The land between the rivers of a water system is called a doāb (meaning "two rivers"), and many of them are named after the rivers that flow on either side of them. A doāb consists of a long, narrow, new alluvial lowland called a beth along the river, and an old alluvial plateau called a bar behind it, which is bounded by cliffs 6 to 10 meters high. Before the introduction of irrigation channels, most of the bars were used only for grazing, except for the foothills where well irrigation was possible, and agriculture was limited to the beth and its surrounding areas.
