The Best Years of Our Lives

American film. 1946. Directed by William Wyler. A masterpiece that moved the world by depicting how war leaves deep scars on the hearts of ordinary citizens. Three demobilized soldiers of different ages and backgrounds who return to the same provincial city overcome various difficulties before returning to everyday life, and are depicted with deep empathy. Wyler, who himself experienced combat on the European front, often uses multi-layered direction that intertwines the lives of multiple characters on one screen, and combined with the pan-focus photography (a shooting technique that clearly shows the foreground and background) of the famous cameraman Gregg Toland (1904-1948), it established another realist aesthetic in postwar films that is different from Italian neorealism. It won a total of eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay. It was also a satisfying work for independent producer Samuel Goldwyn.

アメリカ映画。1946年作品。ウィリアム・ワイラー監督。戦争が一般市民の心にいかに深い傷跡を残すかを描いて世界中を感動させた名作。同じ地方都市に帰還した年齢も環境も異なる三人の復員兵士が、さまざまな困難を経て日常生活に復帰するまでが、深い共感をこめて描かれる。自身、ヨーロッパ戦線で戦闘を経験したワイラーは、一つの画面に複数の人物のそれぞれの人生を交錯させる重層的演出を多用、名カメラマン、グレッグ・トーランドGregg Toland（1904―1948）のパンフォーカス撮影（近景から遠景までを鮮明に映しだす撮影技法）と相まって、イタリアのネオレアリズモとはまた異なる、戦後映画のもう一つのリアリズム美学を打ちたてた。アカデミー作品賞、監督賞、主演男優賞、脚色賞など計8部門を受賞。独立プロデューサー、サミュエル・ゴールドウィンにとっても会心の一作となった。
