A term from Chinese phonology. A Chinese syllable is expressed by the following formula: S = I(M)V(E)/T, which is made up of an initial consonant, a medial consonant, a vowel, and an ending (also called a final, which becomes I(M)V(F)/T), with the tone covering the whole. The initial consonant is called the initial consonant, and -MVE (however, M and E may be missing depending on the syllable) is called the final consonant. T is sometimes considered to be the final consonant, but it is better to think of it as applying to the whole syllable, including the initial consonant. Modern Mandarin Chinese "tian" is interpreted as /tian ¹ /, which corresponds to IMVE/T in turn, and the final consonant is /-ian/. "an" /'an ¹ / is considered to have /'/ (the voiced phoneme of h) as the initial consonant, and the final consonant is /-an/. In this case, there is no medial consonant.

中国音韻学の用語。中国語の音節は，次の式で表わされる。 S＝I(M)V(E)/T ，すなわち，頭子音 initial，介音 medial，主母音 vowel，韻尾 ending (finalともいう。このときは I(M)V(F)/T となる) が並び，それ全体のうえに声調 toneがかぶさってできている。このうちの頭子音を声母といい，-MVE (ただしMとEは音節により欠けることがある) を韻母という。Tも韻母とされることがあるが，これは声母も含む全体にかかるとみるほうがよい。現代北京語「天」は /tian¹/ と解釈され，順に IMVE/T にあたり，韻母は/-ian/ である。「安」 /'an¹/ では声母として/'/ (hの有声音素) があるとみなされ，韻母は/-an/ である。この場合，介音はない。
