A term from Chinese phonology. A Chinese syllable is expressed by the following formula: S = I(M)V(E)/T, which is made up of an initial consonant, a medial consonant, a vowel, and an ending (also called a final, which becomes I(M)V(F)/T), with the tone covering the whole. The initial consonant is called the initial consonant, and -MVE (however, M and E may be missing depending on the syllable) is called the final consonant. T is sometimes considered to be the final consonant, but it is better to think of it as applying to the whole syllable, including the initial consonant. Modern Mandarin Chinese "tian" is interpreted as /tian 1 /, which corresponds to IMVE/T in turn, and the final consonant is /-ian/. "an" /'an 1 / is considered to have /'/ (the voiced phoneme of h) as the initial consonant, and the final consonant is /-an/. In this case, there is no medial consonant.
