An edible mushroom of the Basidiomycete family, Balloonaceae family, Order Matsutake. The cap is 5-10 cm in diameter, has a clay-colored surface covered with a large amount of mucus, and is characterized by radially arranged stripes around the cap. The stem is 5-15 cm in diameter and 1 cm thick, thin at the base, white on the surface and covered with mucus. The gills and spore pattern are muddy brown, and it appears in mixed forests in autumn, with an extremely wide distribution. It is widely eaten as a soup or in stews. Local names include Nururinbou, Amenbo, and Zurakura, and in many regions it is not distinguished from the closely related Numerisasatake.
