Cave - Cave
Also known as an underground pit. One of the most representative remains of medieval and early modern ruins in Japan. A basement several meters below the surface and several square meters in area. Usually has an earthen ceiling. Many of them are thought to have been underground cellars. Currently, in Edo, where many ruins of houses are being investigated, so many such remains have been discovered that the basement is said to be full of holes. The entrances are all about 1 meter on each side, but they vary in size from 3 meters deep and 2 to 3 square meters in area to as large as 20 square meters with steps. Many artifacts are often excavated from inside.

地下式土坑とも呼ばれる。日本の中・近世遺跡の代表的な遺構の一つ。地表下数m,広さ数m2の地下室。通常,土の天井をもつ。その多くは地下の穴蔵であったものと考えられる。現在,多くの屋敷跡の調査が行われている「江戸」では,その地下は穴だらけといわれるほど無数のこの種の遺構が発見されている。入口はいずれも1辺 1mほどであるが,深さ 3m,広さ2~3m2ほどのものから,階段のついた広さ 20m2に及ぶものまでさまざまである。中から多数の遺物が出土することが多い。
