This popular song originated in Trinidad in the West Indies. Following on from African traditions, it is sung with a sense of humor while sharply criticizing town rumors and current topics. It is praised for the humor of its lyrics, and singers often sing their own lyrics in a two-beat rhythm accompanied by a steel band. They compete in a contest every year at the carnival. It was created around 1920. It became popular in the United States from the mid-1940s, and became popular worldwide in 1956 with a record by Harry Belafonte. Since the mid-1950s, songs that emphasize vocal ability have become mainstream. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
