Masayo Asukai

Japanese: 飛鳥井雅世 - あすかいまさよ
Masayo Asukai

A poet of the early Muromachi period. His first name was Masakiyo. His posthumous Buddhist name was Yuga. He was a junior second-rank Gon Chunagon (councillor of state). He was the son of Masayori. He grew up in a Tosho-ke family, where he was a teacher of waka poetry and kemari (traditional Japanese chess), and was trusted by the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshinori. In 1432 (Eikyo 4), he accompanied Yoshinori to Suruga and wrote the travelogue Fuji Kikou (Travelogue of Fuji). The following year, in 1433, he was recommended by Yoshinori and ordered by Emperor Gohanazono to compile an imperial anthology, and in 1439 he completed Shinshoku Kokin Wakashu (New and Continued Ancient and Modern Waka Collection). In 1441 (Kakitsu 1), he became a monk after Yoshinori's sudden death, but he defended his son Masachika and was active in the world of poetry. He has written a hundred poems and a personal anthology, "Masyokyoshu." His style is moderate and straightforward.
