A folk song that has been sung in Ina Valley along the Tenryu River in Nagano Prefecture. Today, it is best known for the lyrics "As we descend Tenryu, we are soaked in spray..." which was the winning entry in a public contest to promote the tourist experience of boating down the Tenryu River in the early Taisho period, but there is an even older song. "Ina Bushi," which begins with the lyrics "The rice that is stored in Ina and Takato, heading towards Kiso..." has its origins in "Ontake Sanbushi," which was sung in the mountainous areas of Shinano Province (Nagano Prefecture) and neighboring provinces as a celebration song, a labor song, and a Bon Odori song. After the Gonbei Pass, which connects the Kiso Valley and the Ina Valley, was opened during the Genroku period (1688-1704), the Mitakeyama-bushi was popularized by horsemen and women who lived in post towns. At the end of the Meiji period, it was unveiled at a fair held in Nagano City, and since then, it has become famous nationwide under the name of Ina-bushi.
