This Buddhist book was written in the late Heian period by the Sanron sect monk Chinkai of Todaiji Temple. It was completed in 1142 (Koji 1). At the beginning of the book, Chinkai says that he wanted to investigate and consider the teachings of the Buddha in order to clear up doubts and gain the certainty of "certain rebirth in the Pure Land," for himself and others who were unsure of whether rebirth in the Pure Land could be achieved through chanting the name of Amida Butsu. This suggests his motivation for writing the book and the origin of the title. This book is representative of Nara Pure Land Buddhist studies in the late Heian period, and in particular, it is believed that the fact that chanting the name of Amida Butsu is the true cause of rebirth in the Pure Land can be found in the credo of Jugyo-Richin (the Practice of Faith) in Zendo's Commentary on the Contemplation Sutra, along with Yokan's Juin (The Causes of Rebirth in the Pure Land), had a significant influence on Honen's later formation of the theory of exclusive chanting of the name of Amida Butsu.
