A settlement on the north bank of the Tone River in the southern part of Nitta County, Kozuke Province, that has existed since the Middle Ages. It is located in the western part of Ojima Town, Nitta County, Gunma Prefecture (present-day Ota City). It was one of the 19 Kokan districts in Nitta Manor that were developed and established by Nitta Yoshishige before 1157, and was called Serada District. It was later passed down to his son Yoshisue (the Serada clan), and in 1221 Yoshisue invited Eicho, a disciple of Eisai, to establish Choraku-ji Temple here. A market was also established in front of the temple, and it became one of the economic centers of Nitta Manor, as described in the Taiheiki: "There are many virtuous people in Serada in Nitta Manor." The area was also a post station and a strategic political and military location, as it was adjacent to a branch of the Tosando road. In the early Edo period, Nitta was considered the ancestral land of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and around 1642, a Toshogu Shrine (Serada Toshogu Shrine) was enshrined within the grounds of Choraku-ji Temple.
