In the days before tonometers, intraocular pressure was measured by pressing the eyeball with a finger (acupressure method) and measuring the degree of pressure applied, but this method is still valuable today as it is extremely simple. Tonometers currently in use measure intraocular pressure by applying a certain amount of force to the eyeball and measuring the degree of deformation (indentation tonometer) or the force required to cause a certain amount of deformation (applanation tonometer). Clinically, there are two types of tonometers: indentation tonometers, such as the Schiøtz tonometer, and applanation tonometers, such as the Goldmann tonometer. …
