North-bound crucian carp

...A hook that allows you to freely adjust the height of a pot or pan relative to the fire in the hearth. The most primitive form was a fork-shaped piece of wood called a matsukagi, which was hung from the ridgepole and was used until recently in huts built for dezukuri (a traditional Japanese hut), but the height could not be adjusted. It was later improved to a hook made of a thick board with sawtooth-like grooves, which allowed the height to be raised or lowered freely by the number of grooves. This type of wooden hook is called a ganda kagi, and can be seen in many places in the Tohoku region, where the Ainu people also used it.
