Japanese: 暖かさの指数（英語表記）warmth index

Months with a monthly average temperature of 5°C or above are considered to be the period in which plants can grow, and this value is calculated by subtracting 5°C from the monthly average temperature. It was devised by Kawakita Jiro to make up for the shortcomings of the Köppen climate classification*. Some books refer to it as the warmth index*, but this may be based on a different calculation method. Conversely, for months with a monthly average temperature of 5°C or below, subtracting 5°C in the same way results in a negative value, but this is called the coldness index*. This was proposed by Kira Tatsuo.

月平均気温が5℃ 以上の月を植物の生育可能期間と考え，月平均気温から5℃ を引いた値を積算したもの．川喜田二郎によって，ケッペンの気候分類＊の不備を補うべく考案されたものである．温量指数＊と記してある成書もあるが，これは別の計算法によるものの可能性もある．逆に月平均気温5℃ 以下の月の場合は，同じように5℃ を引くとマイナスとなるが，こちらは，寒さの指数＊という．こちらは吉良龍夫の提案になる．
