Cognitive development is a field that explores the origins and evolution of cognitive mechanisms such as human knowledge, perception, memory, and learning, and is an extremely important, and one that can be said to be at the core, of cognitive science, which has the ultimate goal of exploring human knowledge. The individual who made the greatest contribution to the establishment of the field of cognitive development was undoubtedly Piaget. Piaget began his research into cognitive development out of his developmental epistemological interest in the question, "What are the origins of cognition and intelligence?", and went on to establish a grand theory regarding the mechanisms of developmental changes in intelligence from infancy through adolescence and adulthood.

認知発達とは人間の知識や知覚，記憶，学習などの認知機構の起源とその変遷を探る領域であり，人間の知を探ることを大目標とする認知科学の中で，非常に重要で，中核的であると言ってもよい研究分野である。認知発達という領域の確立に最大の貢献をした個人はなんといってもピアジェである。ピアジェは〈認識や知能の起源は何か〉という発生認識学的興味から認知発達の研究を始め，乳児期から青年，成人期に至るまでの知能の発達的変化のメカニズムに関しての壮大な理論を打ち立てた。
