[raw]? [Died] c. 462 BC. A democratic politician in Athens, ancient Greece. The politician who ultimately paved the way for the development of democracy in Athens. He was in conflict with Cimon, who was pro-Sparta and had the support of the aristocracy. From 465 BC, he became a general (strategos) and opposed Cimon's support for the Helot revolt in Sparta, but was unsuccessful. However, between 462 and 461 BC, he took advantage of his rival Cimon's absence from sending troops to Sparta to seize the power of the Areopagus and pass laws establishing the power of the assembly (ecclesia) and the council (boule). He was assassinated by his opponents for this. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
