Rosin (pine resin) - pine resin

Japanese: 松やに(松脂) - まつやに

A resin secreted from the trunks of pine trees. Secretions sent from surrounding cells accumulate in the intercellular channels that develop toward the trunk, overflowing to the outside and becoming rosin. To collect it, the bark is peeled off, a cut is made in the wood, and the resin that oozes out is collected. Freshly secreted rosin is a colorless, transparent, sticky liquid (called raw rosin), but over time the volatile components evaporate and it becomes a solid. When steam is applied to this, the resin that comes out with the steam and the volatile components are turpentine (gum turpentine), and what remains is rosin (gum rosin).

マツ属樹木が幹から分泌するやに。幹の方向に発達した細胞間道に，周囲の細胞から送りこまれた分泌物がたまり，外部にあふれでて松やにとなる。採取のためには樹皮をはぎ，木部に傷をつけ，にじみでてきたものを集める。分泌したばかりの松やには，無色透明の，粘りけの強い液体(生松やにと呼ぶ)であるが，時とともに揮発性成分が蒸発して固形物となる。これに水蒸気をあてたときに水蒸気とともにでてくるもの，および前記の揮発性成分がテレビン油(ガムターペンティン)で，残ったものがロジン(ガムロジン)である。
